NOTE: The release of my second book (Watching Baseball Smarter) had nothing to do with my 3,000th ball. They were two separate events. Really. Also, the last line of this article is misleading. It's rare that a player will recognize me and THEN toss me a ball. I wish it would happen more often, but that kind of charity only comes my way once every season or two.
